Soft Lure Maintenance & Storage To Extend Service Life

Quality soft lures can serve you for dozens of fishing trips if you follow correct maintenance and storage habits. Proper care also preserves bait texture, scent and action, so your investment in soft plastics and matching tungsten weight setups stays productive season after season.

The #1 storage rule: separate different types of soft plastic lures. Many soft plastics contain plasticizers that will melt, warp or discolor other baits when stored together in the same compartment. Keep baits in their original packaging, or use divided tackle boxes with individual slots. Never toss all soft worms, creature baits and swimbaits into one single bag.

Heat and direct sunlight are major enemies of soft lures. Do not leave your tackle box inside a hot car trunk or under strong sunshine for hours. High temperature will turn soft baits sticky, deformed or brittle. After every fishing trip, rinse salt, mud and debris off your soft lures with fresh water, then fully dry them before storage. Keep soft baits away from sunscreen, fuel and chemical repellents, which can break down soft plastic material.

Inspect your soft lures before rigging them with tungsten weight. Throw away heavily torn baits that lose natural swimming action. With simple maintenance, your soft lure collection will remain flexible and fish-catching ready for many bass, carp and ice fishing adventures.
